Kučerová, Zuzana ; Marková, Alena (advisor) ; Vávra, Martin (referee)
Diploma thesis "Nazi ideology in relation to mentally ill people" focuses on starting points and ideas of this ideology, which in its consequences led to social exclusion and subsequent systematic extermination of people with a certain handicap. Although the thesis is limited in time from 1933 - 1945, it also follows development line of selected scientific disciplines, which were significantly reflected in the Nazi ideology. Primarily it concerns historical science, medical disciplines, genetics, racial hygiene, eugenic origins and other related disciplines. The thesis also takes into account the economic situation of that time with its many social problems which arose as a result of the new geopolitical arrangement after the World War I and the changes in the social world of that period and it also captures the process of changes in the social status of mentally ill people in the course of history. Last but not least, it describes the practical consequences of these changes, which were "forced sterilization" and "euthanasia" of both children and adults. The Nazi ideology is viewed in this regard from three perspectives: legal, theoretical with a broader historical context and on the practical level in the form of the consequences of the two previous perspectives. Key words: nazi ideology, mental...
Addressing the complex issue of euthanasia in Uwe Timm's novel Ikarien. The birth of racial hygiene out of the spirit of utopian ideals
Bičík, Miroslav ; Broukalová, Jindra (advisor) ; Kafka, Clemens (referee)
Presented Master's thesis deals with euthanasia in the novel "Ikarien" by German author Uwe Timm. The thesis highlights development of its main character Alfred Ploetz, an originator of so-called racial hygiene (German variation of eugenics). Ploetz supported the idea of performing euthanasia on severely disabled people. This was applied at massive scale in Nazi Germany from 1939 to 1945. One of the goals of this thesis is to analyze the connection between utopian notions about the creation of a new man, eugenics and euthanasia performed by Nazis, which is reflected in the life of Alfred Ploetz. Furthermore, the thesis aims to give analysis of literary means used for capturing subject matter and compare factual and fictional parts of this historical novel. KEYWORDS Uwe Timm, euthanasia, racial hygiene, eugenics, utopia, science, Alfred Ploetz

Racial hygiene in Nazi Germany Bc. Klára Setničková Dissertation called Racial hygiene in the Nazi Germany briefly describes the development of the world eugenics emphasizing in the first place its birth and development in Germany and its progressive applying in practice. Reader will find here information concerning the "negative" eugenics covered by Nuremberg laws, sterilization and extermination of mentally ill people or people of "bad" racial origin etc. Also the "positive" eugenics will be mentioned, founding the Lebensborn houses, Germanization of the children etc. Then the work slowly goes toward the Conference at Wansee, to the birth of the idea of final solution of the Jewish question, description of selected concentration camps and ghettos. As a logical outcome of this work I consider joining of the last chapter concerning the Nuremberg Process with German medical practioners charged of brutal experiments on people. Even description as such of the selected experiments is not missing, or mentioning of anthropological survey dealing with collections of Jewish skeletons differing from the norm. Also due to this collection many innocent any healthy people died. Gregor, Adam ; Seltenreich, Radim (advisor) ; Horák, Záboj (referee)
Resumé This thesis titled ,,Comparison of legal aspects of eugenics programs of USA and nazi Germany" elaborates an interesting area of legal history, which describes and compares state eugenics policies of the United States in the 1st half of the 20th century and similarly motivated population policy of nazi Germany. The main sources of this legislation are thoughts associated with struggle against genetic degeneration of population gene pool, which takes place because of reproduction of physically and mentally ,,defective", who pass these indispositions on next generations, and, according to laws of heredity, weaken the human race. In the thesis I distinguish original Galtonʻs and Ploetzʻs eugenics and so called racist eugenics, whose motive is protection and purification of specific social group. The thesis is divided into five chapters, which are further divided into sub-chapters and other additional parts. The emphasis is put on the second, the third and the fourth chapter, whereas the first and the fifths are included in the work, because I considered it a good idea to complete the story of eugenics throughout the history till present. The first chapter contains brief narration about presence od eugenics in societies from pre - state structures till the end of the 19th century, when the first eugenics...
Euthanasia in Europe since the World War II. to the present
PTÁČKOVÁ, Lucie
The aim of the thesis is to describe the historical development of society opinion on euthanasia including comparison of euthanasia during the 2nd World War and the present. Introduction of the thesis focuses on definition of terms associated with euthanasia and assisted suicide. It also describes the influence of racist theories which in the era of National Socialism ultimately resulted to genocide. The thesis also deals with terms such as racial hygiene, palliative care and the emergence of eugenics as a means to ensure suitable and healthy genotype. Influence of psychiatry as a scientific discipline, which was in the beginning of the euthanasia evolution, is also important. The main part of the thesis is to describe the creation and implementation cases of euthanasia in Nazi Germany, including its ideological context. Next part contains description of the development of society as a whole discussion of euthanasia in the post-war years until the first cases of assisted suicide was revealed in the United States in the 80s. The thesis tries to describe in detail the developments of legalization of euthanasia, including the latest information, such as the chapter on the Swiss clinic Dignitas assisted suicide. This work tries to answer the question whether there is no theory of evolution called slippery slope in comparison of social attitudes to euthanasia at the time of Nazism and presents. This could be mainly due to a decline of moral values of society, which results to people behaviour that can be once viewed as a purpose of negotiation on euthanasia. In conclusion there are results of comparison of possible scenarios, including further development of euthanasia.
